Plastic free awareness drove a big shift in dental care, especially toothbrushes. Many of us have heard of a bamboo toothbrush being a sustainable swap, but actually, in the UK we have an even better option available: beechwood.
These brushes are made in Germany, rather than China where all the bamboo ones are made. This reduces the carbon footprint significantly and also means that train and road freight could be used instead of plane or sea.
Why we love these brushes:
- Made from BPA free bristles
- FSC certified beechwood
- Beechwood is naturally antimicrobial
- Offcut wood material is used to heat the factory
- A comfy curved handle and smoothed wood finish
About the brush:
- Best to replace every 3 months
- To recycle, snap the head off/remove the bristles with tweezers. Compost/burn the handle and put the bristles into the normal bin.
Why aren't the bristles plastic free:
- There is a lot of greenwashing around "biodegradable bristles". Currently there is no vegan bristle option which is soft enough to use for your teeth, nor a compostable bristle which people can safely compost at home. A non vegan option would be boar hair, but this then comes with it's own host of issues around welfare. For now, having the brush made in Europe with FSC wood and BPA free bristles is one of the best options for a manual toothbrush.
