Fluoride vs Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste, what ingredients to avoid

The toothpaste debate, do you follow what your dentist says, or go with the overall health approach? The simple answer most of us get from our dentists in the UK is that fluoride is necessary. The fluoride itself is not, but the remineralisation that this compound does is.

This is where Hydroxyapatite comes in. Hydroxyapatite is what already exists in our bones and teeth naturally. It helps rebuild enamel and bone.

The benefits of Hydroxyapatite in toothpaste: (sources)

  • The Hydroxyapatite particles bind to damaged enamel and fill in porous areas
  • It releases calcium and phosphate ions, which are used to remineralize teeth
  • It buffers acidic environments, such as plaque, to promote remineralization.
  • It bonds to proteins like plaque and bacteria, which can help tackle plaque

Fluoride does also prevent cavities, but as it's not found naturally in our body, it unfortunately comes with some side effects.

Side effects of fluoride in toothpaste:

  • Linked to poorer cognitive ability (source)
  • Be poisonous if ingested (not ideal if it's in your mouth, definitely not for children who nearly always swallow some toothpaste)
  • Thyroid and reproductive issues (source)
  • Can cause white specs on teeth

The reason fluoride is allowed to be sold in toothpaste is because it's small amounts and isn't mean to be ingested. We would really recommend you take some time to do your own research on this if it's a concern. We have decided not to sell fluoride toothpaste and stock one which is using hydroxyapatite as the mineralising ingredient.

Other common toothpaste ingredients to avoid:

  • Titanium dioxide, this is actually being banned in food, but still allowed in toothpaste.
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), a foaming agent can cause enamel erosion and gum recession
  • Triclosan: An antibacterial agent that has been linked to antibiotic resistance and hormonal disruptions

"My new approach with Coconut & Cotton is to look at the bigger picture with sustainability both for our own health, and that of the planet's. Through my research I often discover much more than just the supply chain and after learning about hydroxyapatite and the dangers of fluoride I knew that I could only sell what I believed in."
