May brings with it the promise of long summer days to come, and with two bank holidays, half term and the ever popular Shaftesbury festival and Gold Hill Fair, it is the perfect month to get out and about. Whether you are staying close to home or venturing further afield, you can rest assured that we have all you need to help you to be green on the go. The only thing we can’t guarantee is the weather!
If you’re in Shaftesbury this month, then as well as our usual Monday – Saturday opening hours, we will also be open from 10am on Sunday 12th and Sunday 19th May, to coincide with special events happening in the town.
Come and say hello!
Staying hydrated on the go
We all know that hydration is key for health and wellbeing, particularly as the weather gets warmer. Our range of drinking bottles includes both plain and patterned options, with either 500ml or 750ml capacity. We stock a soft bristled bottle brush and also a curved, coconut fibre version, which make it easier to get right into those hard to reach areas for a thorough clean between uses.
Taking your own coffee cup
Following reports highlighting the environmental and economic cost of packaging, reusable mugs have grown in popularity. It is now the norm for restaurants and cafes to accept the customer’s own mug rather than insisting that they use a branded or disposable version, with some offering a discount on the drinks price as an added incentive. However, with a simply staggering 2.5 billion takeaway cups being used and thrown away each year in the UK, there is still a long way to go to stem this single use tide! Many reusable options are still primarily plastic, whereas our offerings are either bamboo or rice husk based with a silicone lid and grip. With a 400 – 450ml capacity and a choice of colours and designs, there is something to suit all tastes – both style and beverage related! You could even take your own bamboo spoon, to use instead of a disposable stirrer!
And remember we also stock items to put in your mug, such as a range of black, green and herbal loose leaf teas, including the aptly named ‘Good Morning Sunshine’ and a selection of refreshing mint varieties. If you do unavoidably end up with a takeaway cup, then please don’t just throw it away! Sadly, only about 0.25% of that huge number of disposable cups are currently recycled . Some local authorities do now have collection points, so check facilities near to you, or you can take any brand of used cup to a Costa store as part of a scheme with Valpak. Recycling isn’t a solution in itself, but it can form part of the answer and minimise further environmental harm being caused.
Always be Picnic ready
For picnics in the park, snacking on the go, or office lunches al fresco (or al desk-o!), these handmade cutlery rolls are a portable and practical option. The roll has five compartments which means there is plenty of space for cutlery and a straw, or other items of your choosing. Or for even more compact convenience, how about an organic bamboo spork? We also stock bamboo children’s cutlery, so the whole family are covered!
Staying prepared on the go will help you avoid single use plastics
On the subject of straws, did you know that an estimated 4.7 billion plastic straws are thrown away each year, in England alone? That’s pretty shocking, but the good news is that this is a change which is easy and instant to make – simply ask for your drink without a plastic straw, and just say no if you’re offered one. Bamboo and steel versions are light to carry with you, with or without a sleeve, and a handy brush makes keeping it clean a breeze.
Food wraps are a great alternative to cling film or a plastic sandwich bag and can reduce both packing and waste. We stock both beeswax and vegan wax versions and their accompanying wax refresher bars. We’ll be writing about food wraps in more detail in the coming months, so stay tuned for future blog posts! Another new product is the keep leaf sandwich bags which can even go in the wash for a clean.
Following simple tips such as these means that whatever you are up to this month, you can enjoy getting out and about with a clear conscience – and concentrate on having fun! You can have a look at our full range of products online or in store, and if there is anything else you feel would support you in your eco-journey, then do let us know.
